Send the Light
Collage, Acrylic, and Oil on Reclaimed Substrate, 2025 (26x30)
Part of the "Reclamation Series"

I found this mass-produced reproduction of the classic painting Guardian Angel—often attributed to Lindberg but originally created by Austrian artist Hans Zatzka in 1918. The painting depicts an angel guiding two children across a precarious bridge, a symbol of protection and divine guidance.

When I discovered this forgotten piece at a thrift store, it wasn’t just the image that drew me in—it was the frame. It carried a certain presence, as if it held its own story to tell. I knew I had to transform it. To modernize the piece and better align it with my vision, I added navy blue paint to the frame, giving it new life and a contemporary touch.

I sought to retain the essence of the original motif while infusing it with themes of ascension and the bringing of light—to the children of the planet and the planet itself. Sacred geometry, particularly the Merkabah, is woven into the work. In Kabbalah, the Merkabah symbolizes the chariot of God, a divine vehicle transporting the soul to higher realms. It represents the union of opposites—spiritual and physical, masculine and feminine—and serves as a sacred emblem of ascension and interconnectedness.

As I leafed through my grandmother’s worn hymnal, I discovered the song titleSend the Light.’ The words resonated deeply, aligning perfectly with the story I wished to tell.I used the sheet music along with images of Mother Earth and the universe, infusing the work with love, light, healing, and the remembrance of our divine nature.

As I reflected on the theme, I realized the folly in asking for light to be sent from outside ourselves. Perhaps true salvation comes not from seeking light externally, but from embracing the light within us all. What if we turned inward, recognizing the light within us? What if we embraced our own divinity, reflected it back to one another, and honored both humanity and Mother Nature herself?

We quietly call to one another, inviting recognition of the divine nature within, beckoning all to awaken and send the light.
