Shine a Little Light

Photography, Resin and Oil on Wood, 2023 (24 x 36)

Portland Head Light, perched on the rugged shores of Cape Elizabeth, Maine, stands as a steadfast sentinel against the ever-changing tides of time. Built in 1791, this lighthouse has guided countless souls to safety, its beacon a symbol of hope and refuge amidst the unforgiving sea. Captured from the water, the image invites reflection on the stories carried by the winds and waves, as the light continues to shine—a steady, unwavering presence through centuries of storms, both literal and metaphorical.

Lighthouses, like Portland Head Light, hold a timeless place in the collective consciousness of mankind, representing guidance, protection, and the promise of a safe harbor. They are symbols of resilience and endurance, offering a glimpse of solace to those lost in life's darkest hours. In this image, I am drawn to the lighthouse’s quiet strength and the sense of reassurance it offers, beckoning travelers home. It’s a light that cuts through the darkness, reminding us that no matter how vast or turbulent the journey, there is always the promise of finding our way back to shore.

Through the addition of rhythm and dynamic movement, the painting breathes life into the lighthouse, casting energy that flows around its sturdy form. The brushstrokes move with purpose, swirling around the beacon, creating a sense of vitality that transcends the stillness of the image, transforming the lighthouse into a living symbol of unwavering guidance and endless movement across space and time.
